"A city is the largest coordination machine humanity has ever built. Streets, zoning, utilities, transit — every piece is a coordination contract between millions of people who will never meet. When those contracts stop updating, cities fail. Sidewalk Labs was an attempt to let the city rewrite its own coordination contracts in real time."
Served as NYC Deputy Mayor for Economic Development under Michael Bloomberg, orchestrating the largest urban transformation in the city's modern history — the post-9/11 economic revival, the PlaNYC sustainability initiative, and the unsuccessful but visionary 2012 Olympic bid. Later founded Sidewalk Labs to build AI-native urban infrastructure before his death from ALS in 2023.
